Personal Electronics Policy

Mobile phones, iPads, and all similar electronic devices are to be silenced, stored away, out of sight, and not in use during academic periods.

Personal Electronics Policy (Includes Cell Phones)

The following policy was developed by our students who committed a semester to conducting student surveys and researching the impact of technology. They then made the following recommendations which were made into policy:

Mobile phones, iPads, and all similar electronic devices are to be silenced, stored away, out of sight, and not in use during academic periods including Venture Project blocks, Studio Classes, Advisory, whole school meetings, and electives unless under the direct supervision of a Compass staff member. We encourage parents to keep phones home or “block” them during school hours (see your service provider for details). We ask that parents NOT text or call students during the school day.

Because the research is clear that cell phones are a disruption to the learning environment and social media is intentionally designed to be addictive, we have implemented strict protocols for cell phone use at Compass. Again, this is supported by a student led initiative to change technology use at our school.  Students do not need their phones during the school day except if they are using the cameras for their work or documentation thereof. This use will be supervised by teachers.

Parents may call the school to get in touch with their child if the need arises, and students are always welcome to use the school phones to place calls to parents.

Violations of this policy will follow the Tiered Action Communication System.
