Why National Researchers Chose Compass as a Model for Competency-Based Learning

When families begin exploring School Choice in Fort Collins, they're often asking the same question:

What does great learning actually look like?

Recently, a national education research organization helped answer that question.

When researchers from FullScale, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing high-quality competency-based education, set out to identify exemplary schools across the country, they didn't begin with just a small sample. They examined more than 100 schools that identify as competency-based before narrowing their research to just 10 schools nationwide where they believed they would find the strongest evidence of exceptional learning.

Compass Community Collaborative School was honored to be one of those ten schools.

Looking Beyond Test Scores

FullScale's mission is to transform K–12 education through research, collaboration, and innovation. Their work helps schools create learning environments that are personalized, competency-based, and centered on the whole child so every student has the opportunity to thrive.

What made this recognition especially meaningful is that the researchers weren't looking for schools with the best marketing campaigns or the most polished websites.

They wanted to understand what students actually experience every day.

They asked questions like:

  • Are students genuinely engaged in their learning?

  • Do students have meaningful, personalized learning experiences?

  • Can students demonstrate mastery in authentic, real-world ways?

  • Do students feel known, challenged, and supported?

Those are the same questions that guide our work every day at Compass.

A Different Kind of High School Experience

Many families searching for the best high school in Fort Collins are looking for more than strong academics. They want a school where their child is known, where learning is relevant, and where students are prepared for life beyond graduation.

At Compass, students don't simply memorize information for a test. They build skills through authentic projects, collaborate with community partners, present their learning publicly, and demonstrate competency before moving forward.

This personalized approach allows students to develop confidence, independence, critical thinking, and communication skills that colleges and employers value.

For many families, it's a refreshing alternative to a one-size-fits-all educational model.

Preparing Students for College and Beyond

Compass students also benefit from extensive opportunities to earn college credit before graduation through our concurrent enrollment high school program in Fort Collins.

By partnering with Front Range Community College, students can complete college-level coursework while still in high school, saving both time and tuition as they prepare for the next stage of their education.

Combined with internships, community partnerships, leadership opportunities, and project-based learning, our graduates leave Compass prepared not only for college, but for meaningful careers and lifelong learning.
