If the enthusiasm of the new 6th and 7th-graders and their families is any measure of success, this year is off to a great start! Our learning model is designed to support students in learning academic and problem-solving (design thinking) skills by working on topics that are relevant and exciting to them. What happens when you let students take the reins on this kind of learning? Here are some of the projects our youngest, newest students are embarking on:
- History of the Civil War and How It Informs Modern Time
- The Process of Learning HorsemanshipHow to Care and Train a Chihuahua Puppy
- Animal Homelessness Public Awareness
- Effects of Caffeine on the Human Brain and Body
- COVID Video Game (Think Oregon Trail for the pandemic)
- Research and Analysis of Gender Bias in the Young Adult Adventure/Romance Genre
- The Art and History of Animation
- Evolution of Rock and Roll
- Robotic Toy Redesign
- Ballroom Culture
- A Photographic Exploration Documenting the Life of Professional Bakers
- Classification of Animal Intelligence
- 8-Bit Art
These are 11-13 year old children. Imagine what they will be working on by the time they are seniors in high school at Compass! Imagine what they will be doing as our neighbors and employees and employers in our community in 10-20 years!
