This quarter, students in Kyle’s Science of Survival class have been busy sparking fires with flint, building tarp shelters, practicing basic wilderness first aid, and preparing for the unexpected outdoors.
But learning in a classroom is one thing—putting those skills to the test is another! Recently, students braved the late-February chill at Lory State Park, transforming classroom lessons into real-world experience, including:
- Tracking animal signs in the snow—because it’s good to know who (or what) might be nearby.
- Sourcing and purifying water—hydration is survival.
- Respecting and protecting nature—as every true Coloradan should.
The cold was real, but so was the adventure.
